Introduction to Our Practice
South Putnam Animal Hospital was founded in 1984 with the vision to provide the highest quality veterinary services for the special pets of the Hudson Valley. Dr. Julie Fixman, who is a board certified Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Canine and Feline Practice, joined the practice in 2001 and now leads our veterinary team as Medical Director. She continues to embrace the longstanding motto of the practice for clients to “Bring us your problems, questions, and concerns, and we will provide you with solutions, answers, and understanding”.
Under new direction, our doctors and staff continue to grow in capability while retaining focus on service and compassion with modern veterinary medical technology to give you the best options to care for your pet. Here is where one of our friendly receptionists will greet you and your pet. They will review your pet’s medical chart and ask any pertinent information. We have the latest computer technology to best serve you. Our computer is used to schedule appointments, maintain client accounts, and store patient information.
Comfortable exam rooms give a private place for you to consult with our veterinary technicians and doctors about your pet’s health care needs. The veterinary technician will begin the visit by getting a ‘history’. A history is very important in trying to find out what is wrong with your pet. It consists of asking questions about symptoms, taking a temperature and weight, and collecting needed specimens for testing. The doctor will then perform a complete physical examination and give you advice on what treatments are needed to further diagnose and/or treat your pet.
The laboratory provides the resources for the veterinary technician to perform lab tests that are a vital part in diagnosing your pet’s health. We can run a wide variety of test in-house as well as those that we send to an outside laboratory. The laboratory also houses our pharmacy. Various medications are in stock to conveniently prescribe to you so you can begin your pet’s treatment immediately.
The treatment area is vital in caring for any sick or injured pet. Any patients who are in our intensive care area receive constant monitoring. The treatment area is equipped with special lighting, a wet table, and a treatment table. The veterinarian and veterinary technicians will perform daily treatments and examinations here. For efficiency and convenience, all medications, instruments, and supplies are within arms’ reach.
The surgical suite is where all sterile surgery takes place. A strict cleaning protocol is maintained to ensure a sterile environment. The doctor wears a surgical gown, mask, cap and gloves. Special equipment is used such as an isoflurane gas anesthesia machine, special surgical lighting and monitoring devices to make your pet’s surgical experience safe and comfortable.
This is our radiograph or x-ray machine. In order to get a clear, informative x-ray, a pet must stay perfectly still for his or her x-ray. Therefore, most pets require sedation. Once a pet is sedated, they are placed on the tabletop of this machine. The veterinary technician will place your pet in different positions to get one or more views of the needed area so the doctor can diagnose any problems.
We have two separate wards. The first is for our surgical and hospitalized patients. Cages are maintained and disinfected as needed throughout the day. Each cage has a card holder on it which states the patient’s name, the patient’s description and why they are hospitalized. The patients medical chart is kept clipped to the front of their cage for reviewing and updating by the staff. Each patient who is admitted to the hospital wears an identification collar as well.
The second hospital ward is known as the “Meow-iott”, our cat medical boarding facility. Not only is it a comfortable home away from home for all our guests, but it actually is home for our hospital cat Sunny. He loves having sleep over parties and I hear he tells one heck of a good cat ghost story!
