Kathi Heiber, DVM Hi! I'm Dr. Kathi Heiber - originally from Cleveland,
Ohio. I graduated from Ohio State University in 1979, and
began practicing in Brewster, NY. I spent my first few years
treating farm animal, horses and pets, so I have some "James
Herriot stories" of my own to tell. In 1984 Dr. Kosacz and I founded South Putnam Animal Hospital
and were fortunate to build a new facility on the same location in
1997. I have been very involved in local activities over the years
including 4-H programs, career day visits at local schools and
serving as a trustee for the Mahopac Public Library. When I am not working or doing community activities you can bet
that I'm riding my Thoroughbred "Big Grin" or my
Arab/Warmblood mare "Gija". They are boarded at a stable in
Putnam Valley, New York. My dog "Pi", a Welsh Corgi/Jack
Russell mix, comes to the barn and loves to go out for trail rides
with Grin and me. My house cat is an adoptee from
the hospital. "Inca" is on the shy side even after 9 years
with us at home. Thank you for visiting with us at spahvet.com

Cynthia Kosacz,
VMD Hi! I'm Dr. Cindy Kosacz, originally from
Providence, RI. I received my B.S. from University of New Hampshire
and graduated from University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary
Medicine in 1976. My first veterinary work was here in Mahopac for
two years doing "mixed practice" some farm animals, lots of horses
and small animals. I then worked for other veterinarians for five
years, primarily treating dogs and cats before opening South Putnam
Animal Hospital with Dr. Heiber in January 1984. Though at times I
miss providing working with large animals, I really enjoy providing
veterinary care to dogs, cats and some pocket pets. Felini, a small grey tiger kitty keeps us
entertained at home and helps socialize the dogs. Currently I am
raising my sixth Guiding Eyes for the Blind puppy, a spunky German
Shepherd named "Ruth Ann" and harbor her mom "Garnet" who is a
brood bitch for the Guiding Eyes for the Blind and the fourth puppy
I raised for this wonderful organization. Raising potential guide
dog puppies has taught me a lot and gives me lots of pleasure. When
"Olympia" the second puppy I raised, was released from training, I
adopted her. Now she and I are a Delta Society Registered Therapy
Team and make visits for AAT (Animal Assisted Therapy). We also do
agility training classes for fun and exercise. The elements of
training as well as the study of animal behavior is an area of
special interest for me in my learning journey. I enjoy gardening and raising orchids. I am a
cooperative extension master gardener and also serve on the Board
of Directors of Putnam Family and Community Services. Hiking,
playing tennis, and skiing keep me outdoors year round and add to
the fun and balance in my life. I feel blessed by the people and
animals in my life who make my days fulfilling and meaningful.
Thank you all for visiting us at the South Putnam Animal Hospital

Julie Fixman, DVM Hi! I am Dr. Julie Fixman. I am a graduate of the Cornell
University College of Veterinary Medicine. Following
graduation, I practiced near Baltimore, Maryland, where I became
adept at "picking" blue crabs and boating on the Chesapeake
Bay. The crabs were great, but I missed being close to my
family in New York (not to mention decent bagels), so I returned to
the north and joined South Putnam Animal Hospital in 2001. I enjoy the daily challenges of veterinary practice,
particularly ophthalmology, surgery, and pocket pets (ferrets,
rabbits, rodents). The wonderful pets and owners have truly
made me feel at home here. I share my life outside of work with my husband, two cats,
and a Golden Retriever named Charlotte (Charlie to her
friends, which includes just about everyone!). When I'm not
vacuuming up pet fur, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and going to the
theater. Charlie and I do a lot of hiking around the area's
great state parks and conservation areas and we are taking classes
to learn agility, a canine sport that involves running a course of
jumps, tunnels, and other obstacles. Charlie is alot more
agile than her mom! |

Judith Mason, DVM Hi, I am Dr. Judith Mason. I graduated from the
University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine in 1983 and
moved to New York a short while later. I have been practicing
veterinary medicine at South Putnam Animal Hospital since 1988 and
am proud to be a part of our excellent staff. I have two teenaged children, a son and a
daughter. They have been visiting SPAH since they were young and my
daughter has shown an interest in becoming a veterinarian like her
mom. April is our family dog. She is a Border collie
mix from North Shore Animal League. Now that she has settled down
as a young adult, we are hoping to start agility work to keep her
mind and body fit. We share our home with two male cats, Lord
Greystoke (a.k.a. grey boy) and Gingerbread boy (a.k.a. Gingy).
Both originally strays, they are now indoor cats. We have built a
custom pen attached to our house for them to be able to visit the
outdoors without getting into mischief. When I am not caring for patients of SPAH and
have finished chauffeuring the kids to various sports and lessons,
I enjoy swimming, gardening, and reading. |

Maria Kaprielian,
DVM Hi! I'm Dr. Maria Kaprielian. I graduated
from Cornell University in 1992 and have been practicing in the
Hudson Valley region for the past 14 years. I found my way to South
Putnam Animal Hospital in August 2004 as a relief
veterinarian. In January 2005, I joined the staff as a
part-time associate. I enjoy many aspects of my job and have a
special interest in exotic animal medicine. In the
past, I've volunteered for many wildlife rehabilitation
groups in the area providing veterinary care for injured hawks and
songbirds. I also have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from
SUNY Purchase and in my leisure time enjoy painting, bird watching,
and gardening. My favorite hobby, however, is caring for my family
which includes a husband, our three-year-old son, and various
four-legged children. "Rhuby", pictured with me below, is a
ten-year-old Basset Hound with glaucoma. Over the years I've
learned a lot about treating various eye diseases from her.
"Speedy,” our four-foot-long green iguana, lives in my painting
studio in a custom-built 6ft x 6ft x 3ft walk-in cage. She often
likes to stroll around the larger room to see what’s new and
comment on my work. Also sharing my studio is "Harvey" a male
red-eared slider (that's a turtle) who enjoys swimming, basking,
and eating shrimp treats. |
